IPL and RF for Dry Eye: Treating the Cause, Not Just the Symptoms
Dry eye is not always solved with drops or warm compresses alone. For many patients, the root cause is inflammation and poor oil gland function, which requires a more targeted approach.
IPL and radiofrequency (RF) are in-office treatments designed to improve how your glands function, stabilize your tear film, and reduce irritation over time. These treatments can benefit both patients with chronic dry eye and those who are tired of the ongoing burden of daily at-home care.
Contact us today to book your appointment at Collingwood Optometry and find out whether IPL or RF treatment is right for you.

What Causes Dry Eye?
Dry eye can develop for a number of reasons, including:
- Meibomian gland dysfunction
- Eyelid inflammation and bacterial buildup
- Screen use and reduced blinking
- Environmental factors such as wind or dry air
- Aging and hormonal changes
Identifying the underlying cause is key to choosing the most effective treatment.
Simple Ways to Manage Dry Eye at Home
For many patients, treatment begins with consistent at-home care:
- Artificial tears: Lubricating drops can provide temporary relief, but they do not address the underlying cause of dry eye.
- Omega-3 supplements: Omega-3s can help improve the quality of the oils produced by the glands. Triglyceride-based forms are generally better absorbed than ethyl ester forms, making them more effective. High-quality formulations, such as PRN omega-3 by Labtician, are often recommended for therapeutic benefit.
- Warm compresses: Heat helps soften and release oils from the glands. A hot cloth or tea bag may feel soothing, but they cool too quickly and do not provide consistent therapeutic heat. A medical-grade option, such as a Bruder mask, maintains the right temperature for more effective treatment.
IPL and RF for Dry Eye Treatment
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy
IPL uses controlled pulses of light to reduce inflammation and improve oil gland function.
During Treatment
- Your eyes are protected with shields
- A cooling gel is applied to the skin
- Light pulses are applied to the lower eyelids and surrounding skin, and are typically also delivered directly to the upper eyelids for a more complete treatment.
- Most patients describe the sensation as a warm snap or light elastic band feeling
- The treatment is quick and well-tolerated
After Treatment
- Mild redness or warmth may occur for a few hours
- Some patients notice early improvement, but results are gradual and cumulative
Treatment Plan
- Initial series of 4 treatments spaced 2 to 4 weeks apart
- Maintenance treatments every 6 to 12 months
Expected Benefits
- Reduced inflammation
- Improved oil gland function
- Better tear stability and comfort over time
Radiofrequency (RF) Therapy
RF uses controlled heat to gently warm the eyelids and surrounding tissue.
During Treatment
- A handheld device delivers controlled heat to the eyelids
- An eye shield protects the eye
- The sensation is typically described as a warm, relaxing massage, though it can feel quite warm at times
- The goal is to soften and melt thickened oils in the glands
How It’s Used
- Often performed alongside IPL
- May be alternated between IPL sessions
- Or used as an adjunct at the end of an IPL series
After Treatment
- Minimal downtime
- Eyelids may feel warm and more comfortable
Other In-Office Treatments for Dry Eye
At-home treatments can be helpful, but they can also be time-consuming and may not fully address inflammation or gland dysfunction.
In-office treatments offer a more direct and effective approach. These treatments are not only for advanced dry eye. Many patients with mild symptoms choose them to reduce the ongoing burden of daily maintenance, like warm compresses and drops.
Eyelid Hygiene and Blepharoexfoliation
The health of the eyelid margins plays a key role in dry eye. Over time, debris, bacteria, and biofilm can build up along the lash line, contributing to inflammation and poor gland function.
Blepharoexfoliation is an in-office treatment designed to gently and effectively clean the eyelid margins. Removing this buildup helps reduce inflammation, improve gland performance, and create a healthier environment for the tear film.
It is often used alongside treatments like IPL and RF to enhance overall results and support long-term improvement.
Scleral Lenses for Dry Eye
For patients with more advanced dry eye, scleral lenses can provide significant relief.
These specialized lenses vault over the surface of the eye and hold a reservoir of fluid against it throughout the day. This creates constant hydration, protects the eye from environmental exposure, and can dramatically improve comfort and vision.
Scleral lenses are typically recommended when other treatments have not provided sufficient relief or when the surface of the eye requires additional protection.
Amniotic Membrane Therapy
Amniotic membrane therapy is used to support the healing of the ocular surface in more severe cases of dry eye or inflammation.
This treatment involves placing a biologic membrane on the eye, which helps reduce inflammation and promote tissue repair. It can be especially helpful when the surface of the eye is damaged or does not respond well to standard treatments.
Find Out what Dry Eye Treatment Is Right for You
Dry eye is often manageable, but not always with drops alone. When inflammation and gland dysfunction are involved, treatments like IPL and RF can provide a more targeted solution.
A comprehensive dry eye assessment allows us to determine the cause of your symptoms and recommend the most appropriate treatment plan.

Consent forms for IPL and RF treatments can be provided ahead of your appointment for review. These can be accessed online or shared with you directly prior to treatment.
